Dairy Spot: The Mid-Atlantic Spot for Dairy

Congratulations to Our 2006 3-A-Day of Dairy Nutrition Education Grant Winners

Elizabeth Forward Middle School

Elizabeth Forward Middle School has developed a combination of many smaller project elements completed throughout the school year.  Various projects stressing nutrition education have been accomplished in health and family/consumer science classes as well as in physical education classes

Students have described nutritional reasons for having three servings of dairy a day and have tasted a variety of dairy products including yogurts, cheeses, ice creams and milks. They also created posters in family/consumer science classes describing how and why calcium is important for the body.

Additional activities to date include:

  • The kick-off celebration in the fall had students distributing pamphlets about “New Look of School Milk” in the cafeteria and taking a simple survey about how much milk students drink and their favorite flavors. Lowfat chocolate milk won, with strawberry as a close second.
  • A presentation was made to the football, bowling and basketball teams about the importance of “Thinking your Drink.” The student athletes were encouraged to choose milk as an after-practice drink instead of other beverage products.
  • Posters of students in “got milk?” mustaches were created and placed in the cafeteria and gym area.
Students used technology and the www.mypyramid.gov Web site to list reasons for having three servings a day of milk, cheese or yogurt. This was done in sixth and seventh grade family/consumer science classes.
