First Ever Surgeon General's Report on Bone Health

Ten million Americans over the age of 50 have osteoporosis, the most common bone disease, while another 34 million are at risk for fractures. Bone fractures related to this disease are suffered by approximately 1.5 million people per year. These statistics come from the first ever Surgeon General's Report on Osteoporosis released in October 2004.

According to Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, "this report will shape the way we approach, talk and act about bone diseases." U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona says, "We all need to take better care of our bones and we're never too old to do that."

This call to action for Americans recommends milk, yogurt and cheese as high level sources of calcium and fortified milk as an excellent source of vitamin D.
