African-Americans Not Getting Enough Calcium
According to a new Consensus Report on Dairy Nutrients published in the Journal of the National Medical Association, 89 percent of African Americans don't consume the daily recommended amount of calcium. The report suggests African-Americans should include three to four servings of lowfat dairy products daily to reduce the risk of conditions and diseases such as high blood pressure, obesity, stroke and colon cancer, which disproportionately affect African-Americans.
The National Medical Association report is one of the first to explore sociological and cultural issues that shape African-American diets. The new data shows that African- American children drink milk half as often as other kids. The report states:
- 46 percent of African-Americans consume less than one dairy serving daily, but everyone needs at least three servings.
- While a majority of African-Americans don't classify themselves as lactose intolerant, 85 percent said if they knew they could avoid symptoms, they would add more milk and dairy products to their diets.
