New American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Statement

A new scientific statement from the AHA about added sugars and cardiovascular health has been published in the September issue of their journal, Circulation. The statement mainly focuses on the recommendation to limit the intake of added sugars to no more than 100 calories a day for women and 150 for men, and there are two positive statements specifically regarding flavored milks:

  • “In addition, sugars add desirable sensory effects to many foods, and a sweet taste promotes enjoyment of meals and snacks.  In fact, when sugars are added to otherwise nutrient-rich foods, such as sugar-sweetened dairy products like flavored milk and yogurt and sugar-sweetened cereals, the quality of children’s and adolescents’ diets improves, and in the case of flavored milks, no adverse effects on weight status were found.”
  • “Soft drinks, sugar, and sweets are more likely to have a negative impact on diet quality, whereas dairy foods, milk drinks, and presweetened cereals may have a positive impact.”
