Smoothie Day

Author: Emily Natalie

In honor of our current Fuel Up to Play 60 challenge entry, we’re planning our first “Smoothie Day” at Harding. We’ve always talked about doing a smoothie day for quite some time, but it’s been difficult to get everything together to pull it off because of the large number of students. MORE

School Lunch: Let Choice Rule

Author: Althea Zanecosky

Over the last year, I have observed school districts making healthier changes to their menus.  For some districts it’s been gradual; for others more drastic.  The media paid a lot of attention to the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) last fall when administrators took a hard line on school nutrition, eliminating longtime childhood favorites like flavored milk and chicken nuggets.   MORE

Coffee for Heart Month

Author: Rosanne Rust

February is American Heart Month and while there was a time when coffee was forbidden for “heart patients,” newer research shows that moderate amounts of coffee may be beneficial to health and doesn’t correlate to increased risk for heart disease. Coffee contains many antioxidants and may actually decrease the risk of heart disease and stroke. That’s good news to me because I love coffee. MORE

Milking Like a Rock Star

Author: Daniela Roland

Some of our heifers are headed off to boarding school. Well, not exactly, but they are headed to what is called a “custom heifer raiser.” Every few months, we send some of our heifers to a farm in Huntingdon, Pa. The farmer, Rick, raises heifers for several area dairy farmers. To clarify, a heifer is a “teenaged” cow – older than a calf, but a heifer has not had her own calf yet. MORE

Farm Show 2012

Author: Althea Zanecosky

I was at the Pennsylvania Farm Show last week to help at Mid Atlantic Dairy Association’s exhibit booth, “Your Milk Comes from a Good Place.” It was great to be back there to see the people, exhibits and animals – and to sample the food!  I guess it isn’t fair to say everyone goes to the Farm Show for the food, but I think it is safe to say food is always a big feature.  Numbers released from the 2011 event reported that visitors consumed 100,000 milkshakes, almost a quarter-million potato doughnuts, and nearly 900 gallons of honey ice cream. It seems that every year the number one New Year’s resolution is for people to get healthier by eating better and starting to exercise more. It may be easier for adults to access the necessary tools to achieve those goals than kids today. MORE
