Kennedyville, Md.

This Maryland farm is named after St. Brigid, the patron saint of dairymaids and scholars who was renowned for her compassion and often featured with cows at her feet. She perfectly represents the pairing of owners Judy Gifford and her business partner veterinarian, Dr. Robert Fry.
St. Brigid’s Farm was established in 1996, with 69 Registered Jersey cows. The farm now has a herd of 160 Jersey cows. Robert and Judy are guided by the ideal of sustainable farming which is a way of farming that conforms to the nature of places and the nature of people. The three cornerstones of sustainability are ecological soundness, economic viability and community involvement. The 55 acre farm, located on the scenic eastern shore of Maryland, is planted in permanent pasture, allowing the cows to graze exclusively from April through November.
The farm strives to minimize its impact on the environment by balancing nitrogen and phosphorus with the needs of the crops and soil, fencing out waterways and protecting habitat. Each year, every fourth grade student in the county visits the farm and learns how milk is produced. In addition, Robert and Judy host a Field to Fork dinner to support a local organization and expose guests to farm life.
In addition to the milk the farm sells, they also sell grass fed Jersey beef and veal directly to individuals and restaurants. St. Brigid’s Jersey beef is offered on the menu of the farm’s favorite local restaurant, Brooks Tavern, in Chestertown, Md.
The pairing of a dairymaid and scholar has resulted in a beautiful farm which produces high quality milk, beef, and veal.
