Three Schools Win “Finish First with Milk” Promotion

Three area schools won pep rallies with an NFL player – a reward for their efforts to “Finish First with Milk.” Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association created the promotion to teach students about the health benefits of drinking lowfat and fat-free milk as part of a healthful diet. The winning schools posted the highest increase in milk consumption for their NFL market for the one-month period of Oct. 17 through Nov. 17, 2011, compared to the year-earlier totals for the same time period.

Meade Middle School, Fort Meade, Md., finished the month with a 35.6 percent increase and earned a visit from Baltimore Ravens’ running back Ray Rice.

Saints Peter and Paul School, West Chester, Pa., had the highest increase in milk consumption of all schools participating in the promotion – 77 percent! Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek joined students and faculty to celebrate their outstanding finish.

Aiken Elementary School, Pittsburgh, Pa. received a visit from Pittsburgh Steelers’ safety Ryan Clark for its 9.5 percent increase during the contest period.

The players talked to students about the importance of eating right and getting at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.  The players also led the students in a series of exercises and answered questions about their own health and fitness regimens.

Pennsylvania Program Advisor of the Year!

Fuel Up to Play 60 kicked off the 2011-2012 school year by recognizing adults nationwide who encourage students to Get Active, Eat Healthy, and Make a Difference. Congratulations to the Pennsylvania Program Advisor of the Year Emily Natalie. Natalie is a teacher at Harding Elementary School, The School District of the City of Erie, Erie, Pa.

Under Natalie’s guidance, students at Harding Elementary are kicking off their third year of Fuel Up to Play activity. Through her efforts, and those of others, schools across the country are encouraging youth to consume nutrient-rich foods such as low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains and achieve at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

Read about what is happening at Harding Elementary School – and other schools across the country - to find out how you, too, can make a difference! You can also follow Natalie and her Fuel Up to Play 60 student team on Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association’s Dairy Diary Blog.

Fuel Up to Play 60 visited Harding Elementary this past June to get an in-depth look at how students and their Program Advisors implemented the program at their school. In the resulting video, students, educators and parents discuss how Fuel Up to Play 60 has made a difference by encouraging youth to eat healthy and get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
