National Dairy Council® Challenges Consumers to Rethink Their Refrigerators and Offers Chance to Win a Dream Nutritional Makeover

“Ultimate Fridge Makeover Contest” – One Way to Get Families to Enjoy More Nutritious Foods

PITTSBURGH (August 20, 2007) – Looking for inspiration to transform your cluttered and unhealthily stocked refrigerator into a destination for nutritious meals the entire family can enjoy? Families nationwide can explain why their refrigerators need a nutrition renovation by entering the first “Ultimate Fridge Makeover Contest” sponsored by the National Dairy Council.

One grand prize winner will receive a brand new stainless steel General Electric refrigerator stocked with nutritious foods, including lowfat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains and an in-home visit and personal nutritional consultation from a well-known culinary/nutrition expert. The expert will offer tips for preparing healthy meals based on the 2005 Dietary Guidelines and a “ how-to” guide for stocking refrigerators with nutrient-rich foods, which provide substantial amounts of vitamins and minerals and are relatively low in calories.

Between Aug. 15, 2007 and Sept. 29, 2007, those in need of a new fridge and eating plan can visit www.3aday.org to enter the contest by submitting a 50-word essay on why they deserve the “ Ultimate Fridge Makeover” and uploading a photo of their unhealthy, disorganized refrigerators. The contest Web site can also be reached through Web banners on additional sites, including: Gather.com, WebMD.com, CaféMom.com, ClubMom.com, GreatSchools.net, Meredith Interactive and iVillage.com. A panel of judges will narrow down the entries to 10 finalists, who will be revealed on the contest Web site starting Oct. 8, 2007. Consumers will then have a chance to vote online from Oct. 9 to 22, 2007, for the refrigerator they believe is in most need of a nutrition makeover.

Two runners-up each will receive a new stainless steel General Electric refrigerator as well as a $250 gift card to a local grocery store which they can apply towards the purchase of nutrient-rich foods. In addition, seven finalists each will receive a $250 gift card to a local grocery store which they can also apply towards the purchase of nutrient-rich foods. All winners will be announced in early November.

“The National Dairy Council encourages moms to adopt and provide healthier meals and snacks, specifically nutrient-rich dairy foods, for their families,” says Jennifer Diemert, registered dietitian, of Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association. “The ‘Ultimate Fridge Makeover Contest’ is just another way to help families make lifestyle and nutrition choices that are good for them.”
