Camelot Café Earns Loyalsock Township Senior High Breakfast Award Grab & Go Option Brings Healthy Breakfast to More Students

PHILADELPHIA (September 18, 2007) – Loyalsock Township Senior High in Williamsport was recognized today for its innovative school breakfast program with a $2,000 Expanding Breakfast grant.

The award program, funded by Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association and your local dairy farmers, was launched this year to call attention to the importance of alternative school breakfast options.  Offering breakfast outside of the classroom increases participation by providing service for students who arrive late or who prefer to socialize rather than eat. It also helps to remove the potential social stigma that the program is meant for low-income students.

The Camelot Café is a fun and high energy gathering place for the entire school community, according to foodservice director Beth Hufnagel. “It’s generates a community spirit among students, faculty and administration.”

“Schools were originally designed as an extension of the home,” said assistant principal Matthew Reitz. “The Camelot Café has become a bright spot for folks at the beginning of each school day.”

Students and faculty can enjoy their lowfat milk, milk-based hot chocolate, 100 percent juice, water, whole grain cereals, cereal bars, bagels, granola bars, fresh fruit, yogurt and breakfast sandwiches around stand-up tables. The district plans to use the grant to build on the success of the Camelot Café by expanding the grab-and-go breakfast program at the middle school level.

“The benefits children receive from eating a nutritious breakfast are numerous and well-documented,” said Carolyn Weaver, school marketing manager, Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association. “Eating breakfast yields better student test scores, increases concentration and attendance, decreases disciplinary problems and more.”

Schools across Pennsylvania that offer a non-traditional breakfast program were eligible to enter the contest.  The applications were reviewed by a panel of judges from Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association and the National Dairy Council.
