Elizabeth, Pa.
As a 2006 3-Every-Day of Dairy Nutrition Education Grant winner, Sue Ellen Nangle, family and consumer science teacher at Elizabeth Forward Middle School, held dairy-filled learning opportunities throughout the 2006-2007 school year. Approximately 700 sixth- through eighth-graders participated in the following activities to learn about the nutritional benefits of dairy foods:
- Fall kickoff celebration in which students sampled various milk flavors to determine their favorites.
- Presentations to student athletes regarding chocolate milk as a sports recovery drink. Milk samples and informational brochures were provided to sports teams.
- Students created posters of themselves sporting milk mustaches and featuring the “got milk?®” logo. The posters were displayed in both the cafeteria and gym.
- “Got Cheese?” Day during which students sampled new types of cheese.
- A registered dietitian from Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association discussed with 150 students the importance of milk and dairy foods as part of a healthy lifestyle.
- To celebrate National Nutrition Month in March, students tracked their dairy intake for one week. On average, students increased their intake of dairy by 50 percent!
- Dairy tips were included weekly on the morning announcements.
With the use of educational materials and resources obtained through the 3-Every-Day of Dairy Nutrition Education Grant, students at Elizabeth Forward Middle School will continue to learn about the importance of dairy foods as part of a healthy diet in years to come.
