Classroom Activities
Writing My FLERG
Objective:
The FLERG is designed to be a creative and interdisciplinary approach to a language arts activity. The goal is to have children write a story or poem incorporating as a subject a thing, event, etc., that uses the criteria within the FLERG (see below).
The FLERG can be viewed as an evaluation/checklist tool for students as they write to see if they have incorporated all of the criteria. This activity will encourage students to expand their nutrition and health awareness through creative writing.
Materials Needed:
- Writing paper
Method:
- Introduce the activity as a creative writing exercise that will allow for a great deal of individualism and fun. An example may be a story about a real or imaginary camping trip. Children could write about how they got to the campsite, what they did while there (exercise & fitness component); foods they ate or made, i.e. smores (really tastes good component); fun they had with family or friends on the adventures (laughter & feel good component).
- Define a FLERG as something that:
- Keeps them Fit
- Makes them Laugh
- Gives them Exercise
- Really tastes good
- Helps them feel Good
- Establish writing format options, i.e., a short story, a poem, a rap, a comic strip, etc.
- Students share their FLERGS with the class.
