Dairy Spot: The Mid-Atlantic Spot for Dairy

Classroom Activities

Food Geom-moo-try

Objective:

The students will learn the concept of balance from a simple experiment and be able to apply it to a healthy diet.

Materials Needed:

  • A lightweight book for each student
  • Daily Food Guide Pyramid poster

Method:

  • Ask students to define balance and give example.
  • Direct each student to balance a lightweight book on the fingertips of one hand.
  • Each fingertip represents a food group, and the book is the total diet.
  • Have students continue balancing the book while taking away one finger at a time until only one fingertip remains supporting the book, if possible.
  • Reinforce the concept of balance needing all components working together. The book needed all five fingers to support it and a balanced diet needs all five food groups to support a healthy diet.
