Marketplace
Objective:
Interactive market encourages students to use nutrition knowledge to sell fruits and vegetables.
Materials Needed:
- Various fruits and vegetables - use real produce or food models (to order food models, click here)
- Construction paper
- Crayons/markers
- Play money
Method:
- Divide the children into two groups - grocers and shoppers.
- Introduce the various fruits and vegetables to the children and have the grocers assign a price to each one. Have the children draw additional produce not already included on construction paper, if they desire.
- Each shopper receives play money to buy produce at the market.
- Have grocers think about how to advertise their produce - how can they make their produce look and sound more appealing? Why should someone buy their produce? Encourage them to think of sales pitches for each item and create signs to advertise and display prices.
- After the shoppers have "purchased" their produce, have the groups gather together to discuss what was bought and why.
