Writing Concrete Poems
Objective:
This activity will encourage students to expand their writing skills using food and nutrition information in the creation of non-traditional poetry.
Materials Needed:
- Example of a concrete poem on blackboard
- Drawing paper
Method:
- Identify a concrete poem as words describing an item, which are then written within the shape of the item being described.
- Ask each student to think of a favorite food, i.e. chocolate milk.
- Students draw an outline of the food on drawing paper, i.e. a glass of chocolate milk
- Students think of words to describe the food and write them within the food outline
- Descriptive words do not have to rhyme to be a concrete poem.
- Students share their poems with the class.
- Assemble all poems into a classroom poem book.
