Objective:

This activity will encourage students to expand their writing skills using food and nutrition information in the creation of non-traditional poetry.

Materials Needed:

  • Example of a concrete poem on blackboard
  • Drawing paper

Method:

  • Identify a concrete poem as words describing an item, which are then written within the shape of the item being described.

  • Students draw an outline of the food on drawing paper, i.e. a glass of chocolate milk
  • Students think of words to describe the food and write them within the food outline
  • Descriptive words do not have to rhyme to be a concrete poem.
  • Students share their poems with the class.
