Lower Township School District provides a free breakfast to its elementary students. The district is committed to ensuring that all students start the school day with a nutritious meal. Students enjoy milk, fruit juice and Grain Group choices, such as whole grain cereals, a “bread basket” and “bagelers” in the comfort of their classroom. Support for Breakfast in the Classroom comes from administrators and teachers, and educational efforts promote the importance and benefits of eating breakfast.  Currently, 59 percent of students start their day with breakfast at school.

Serving Breakfast in the Classroom is a team effort, involving administrators, teachers, students and the custodial staff. LuAnn Hemple, food service supervisor, credits cooperation from all involved as the key to a successful breakfast program. Breakfast participation increased 5 percent during the 2006-2007 school year, and 37 percent of students now eat breakfast at school.  Hemple says the teachers have noticed that students are better prepared for the school day and that there are fewer disruptions and visits to the nurse’s office.
