Schools Put Fuel Up to Play 60 in Motion
Kingsway Middle School Kicks Off Fuel Up to Play 60
School nurse and wellness champion, Julie Riggi, Kingsway Regional Middle School, Woolwich Township, N.J., used Fuel Up to Play 60 to implement what began as an idea last year, when the school wellness council was exploring ways to encourage students make healthier lifestyle choices.
Kingsway Regional Middle School kicked off Fuel Up to Play 60 during an extended lunch with a visit from celebrity chef Joseph Poon. While Poon spoke to students about the importance of healthful eating, he demonstrated his culinary skills, carving fruits and vegetables into a variety of artful creations. After the presentation, students sampled a variety of fruits and vegetables and enjoyed flavored milk in 8-ounce plastic bottles. The event also featured a “Jammin’ Minute” led by the physical education department.
Kingsway used the kick-off event to initiate and promote its Fuel Up to Play 60 physical activity strategy, the “Play 60” Club, an after-school event that meets twice a month. According to Riggi, there is no set game or planned activity; students sign-up for activities they want to do. The only requirement is that students move and have fun.
Riggi launched a similar event last year, but only a few students attended the meetings. She credits the Fuel Up to Play 60 kick-off event with generating excitement for the “Play 60” Club.
“Having a forum in which you can introduce the concept of eating healthy and being active in a fun and captivating way is the most important part of a successful campaign, and I think we learned that firsthand,” Riggi said.
