Alburtis Elementary School Is a SWELS Rewards! Winner
Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association is proud to recognize Alburtis Elementary School in Alburtis, Pa., for its efforts to promote nutritious food choices. Anita Sutton, food service director, East Penn School District, received a $2,000 SWEL Rewards! check on behalf of the Alburtis foodservice department. The Nutrition Group manages the foodservice department at East Penn School District.
To increase the dairy and fruit intake of their students, the foodservice staff held a “smoothie with lunch” day. Staff prepared the smoothies, blending lowfat milk, vanilla yogurt and fruit. The twist: students picked the fruit for their drinks. According to Sutton, the students thoroughly enjoyed the smoothies and were very excited about participating in the process.
Dr. Ronald Renaldi, Alburtis Elementary School principal, was on hand for the check presentation. In addition to the $2,000 check, Alburtis received Dick’s Sporting Goods gift cards, which Sutton will use to purchase sporting items for prizes for future promotions. As for the rewards check, the school will purchase equipment for the kitchen. Sutton explained that the department would like the students to participate in the decision making process. The staff would like their equipment purchases to be used to prepare items the students would like to see on the menu. Possibilities include a panini press and Belgiun waffle maker.
SWEL Rewards! recognizes innovative programs implemented by food management companies in Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association territory. In addition to documenting ways they support a healthy school environment, SWEL applicants were asked to share innovative projects and promotions they have planned in their school.Pennsbury High School Receives Child Nutrition Breakfast Grant
