Betty Brdar Brings Home “the Peppy”

Craig Patterson, Turner Dairy, and Betty Brdar, school marketing manager, Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association, teamed up to encourage bowlers to refuel with milk. The pair not only increased milk vending sales, but also received a MilkPEP Award (the PEPPY) for their efforts. Patterson and Brdar accepted their Peppy at the 2009 MilkPEP National Dairy Sales & Marketing Meeting in Cleveland, Oh. The MilkPEP Award recognizes sales and marketing personnel who increase milk sales using MilkPEP programs and promotional materials for retail, school or local marketing activities.

Patterson and Brdar developed a milk vending promotion at Nesbits’ Bowling Lanes, Plum, Pa., which has a very successful afterschool bowling program. To promote the program, “got milk?®” stickers were randomly placed on Turner Dairy’s milk bottles in the vending machine. People who purchased milk with a sticker received a free game of bowling. Their names were also entered into a drawing to win an autographed bowling ball and the opportunity to “meet & greet” former Pittsburgh Steelers player and avid bowler, Jerome Bettis. Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association partnered with ESPN 1250 Radio to sponsor the "meet & greet" event. Table tents and posters created an awareness of the promotion and MilkPEP’s chocolate milk recovery banners were visible throughout the bowling facility.

The result: Milk sales increased from 10 units per week to over 100 per week.
