Lycoming County Fitness Challenge

The fourth annual Lycoming County Fitness Challenge was held on January 11 at the Generation Sports Dome in Muncy, Pa. The Lycoming County Fitness Challenge was started to combat childhood obesity by encouraging kids to be physically active and make it a family affair. The challenge lasted one month, from January 11 to February 12, at which time the children with the most points won prizes. Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association provided 500 “Get Moving, Get Fit” T-shirts and an incentive item for every child that participated in the Challenge.

At the kick off, Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association provided low-fat chocolate milk in plastic bottles.

The Lycoming County Fitness Challenge is sponsored by the Lycoming County Health Improvement Coalition’s Wellness Council, and supported by more than 30 athletic, business and civic organizations. Participating students track their daily exercise. Each minute of out of school activity or exercise earns one point, and points double when children exercise with an adult family member. Students earn points by participating in various physical activities, including swimming, snowboarding, rollerblading, Wii games, Frisbee and more.

“The Lycoming Fitness Challenge is a fun way for students across Lycoming County to increase their physical activity levels,” said Beth Hufnagel, food service director of Loyalsock Township School District. “The Fitness Challenge also fosters awareness of the healthy benefits of leading an active lifestyle in both student participants and their families.”
